The Griswold Inn was established in It is centrally located and, along with many of the buildings on Main Street, looks just like Williamsburg, VA.
The present-day Inn is comprised of at least four houses clustered around Griswold Square. We were in Room 31, which is one of two second floor rooms in a building across the street from the original Inn building.
The room could not be any quieter. It took a while to figure out how to use the wall-mounted tablet to control the room temperature but it works very well. A very filling buffet breakfast in the original Inn building comes with each room. The food selection was vast- multiple types of salads, couscous, macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes, mixed veggies, pork, stuffed chicken, carving and pasta stations and a multitude of desserts.
The only reason why it's not a 5 star rating The dining rooms are dark so it definitely has an older feel which is just what the Inn is and the service, although friendly, wasn't as attentive as I thought it could have been.
Overall, a great Easter experience! We live in New York which is about an hour and a half from here and are so happy we decided to come for brunch Our family from Connecticut has been here many times and when invited we joined them and were so happy we did.
This is a restaurant from times gone by We will definitely be back and urge you to give it a try. Why thank you, "Christmas"! We're delighted you enjoyed our spot and appreciate you sharing your comments with the traveling public. We look forward to your return visit. While you were here for our famous Sunday Hunt Breakfast, as you may have discovered, there are many other ways to enjoy 'The Gris' - including an overnight stay!
Who'd think Connecticut history circa Steamboat invention, through it's heyday We took a tour this Sunday afternoon with a bunch of like-minded people of this oldest continuously operating inn in America. There's sex, there is fifth grade humor, there is wine, prohibition, sabotage, temperance, killing of elephants in Africa, explosions, fire You can even stand at the exact place where the first woman stood at a bar in Connecticut and ordered and was served a drink The wine was continuously sipped by our host to keep his throat from becoming dry There was a jazz band playing in the tap room when we got there.
It was a hoot and a holler and the place seem to be filled with regulars. Then they transitioned to a guitar soloist, and as the evening approached, the romantic glow of candles and lanterns and soft lighting accenting the art collection Truth be known, the performance of our host, Geoffrey Paul, was worthy of a Tony Award for Best something-or-other.
We thought we were booking a room at the Griswold Inn, however we got a room across the street. At first I was really miffed we were not staying in their main building.
However, after see the room and spending the night, we really loved it. The room is across the street on the second floor of a old house. There is small coffee shop on the first floor and you enter the second floor through a rear door that also leads into the coffee shop. Like the Griz, the place is very old. However it has a nice sitting room, a bedroom facing the Griz and a modern bathroom. It was a cold night, but the rooms are very toasty. Profile JOIN.
